Scholars Explore the World of Fashion

Uniondale Union Free School District’s Grand Ave Elementary School recently held Pre-K Fashion Week. Designed to promote academic performance through daily activities, each day throughout the week was dedicated to a different predetermined theme. Scholars were tasked with following that theme through their unique fashion choices.

“Fashion week is a great unit here at Grand Avenue that we use to teach our Pre-K scholars about different types of clothing and how to correctly identify them,” said Principal Mrs. Juanita Bryant-Bell. “From designing their outfits to walking the runway, it’s an effective way to teach our scholars about everything from how to match an outfit to why we wash our clothes.”

Starting the week on Monday, scholars were told to wear red for Lunar New Year. Sporting “Year of the Rabbit” crowns, each class took turns in a small photo shoot in front of the Lunar New Year backdrop. On Tuesday, the scholars were asked to dress as community leaders. Outfits included chefs, firefighters, police officers, doctors and more. Wednesday was Hippie Day, where they wore jeans and an assortment of tie-dye. On Thursday, they put their style skills to the test, being asked to dress their best. Scholars took to the runway in a fashion show they put on for their parents. Finishing off the week on Friday, the scholars were told to relax and wear their favorite pajamas.

Having scholars dress up to follow a theme is a method to help scholars make their own creative choices and support their learning. Theme weeks help motivate scholars to attend school, create cohesion and help them feel closer to one another. It also manufactures a learning opportunity on the topics of each theme.
