June 2024 SUPERINTENDENT'S BRIEF Vol1 Issue 6 Junenteenth Written by Dr. Monique Darrisaw-Akil On Saturday, June 15th, the Uniondale PTSA hosted our district's Juneteenth celebration. This event was an opportunity for participants to reflect on the important history between this holiday. On June 19, 1865, nearly two years after President Abraham Lincoln emancipated enslaved Africans in America, Union troops arrived in Galveston Bay, Texas with news of freedom. More than 250,000 African Americans embraced freedom on what became known as Juneteenth or Freedom Day. Juneteenth is the federal holiday, enacted by Congress in
